Money

This week i watched the episode "money," of NBC's "The Office." In this episode Michael Scott's girlfriend wants to get new carpet, furniture and tiles for their condo. Michael gets low on money and is forced to go out and get a second job as a telemarketer. Michael does this because he does not want to tell his girlfriend, Jan, that he is having problems and he feels like he has to take care of financial problems himself. This shows that the male is expected to make the money in a relationship while the woman stays home and takes care of the house. Jan does not have a job and does not contribute financially at all. By the end of this episode Michael cuts up all of his credit cards and is forced to tell Jan about his problems. Michael then tries to hop a train out of town. As he is sitting on the train waiting for it to leave Jan comes and finds him and talks him out of it. This shows that the woman is the voice of reason in a relationship. The woman is there to make rational decisions. In the end Michael decides to get off of the train and him and Jan promise to resolve their money issues together.

Anchorman

The movie “Anchorman,” shows a lot of sexism. Ron Burgundy, the main character, is an anchorman for a news station in San Diego. When the station brings its first woman, Veronica Corningstone, to the news team she is not accepted. The original news team (consisting of Ron, Brick, Brian and Champ) immediately try to get their boss, Ed Harken, to reconsider hiring Veronica. Veronica is given terrible stories to cover when she first starts because she is a woman. One of the stories she covers is a cat clothing show. Veronica is clearly qualified to cover better stories but because she is a woman the news station keeps her at the bottom of the ranks.
Ron falls in love with Veronica and they start a relationship. This does not last long though because Ron has an incident one day and can’t make it to work on time so Veronica had to fill in. When Ron found out that someone else told “his” news he freaks out and breaks up with Veronica. This is when Veronica is given her big break and is promoted to co-anchor with Ron. Of course Ron does not like this and he and Veronica viciously argue when they are off the air.
Things progressively get worse and Veronica tricks Ron into cursing on the air. Ron is fired and Veronica becomes the sol anchorman. Ron’s life spirals downwards and he becomes an angry drunk. He spends his time in the bar watching Veronica’s career sky rocket. Soon the original news team is forced to ignore Ron and that’s when his life hits rock bottom.
Things turn around for Ron when Veronica is nowhere to be found when a panda at the local zoo is giving birth. The news station calls wrong and asks him to come back to report the panda story. Ron eagerly accepts and finds himself back at the top and doing what he loves most. When he gets to the zoo he finds veronica in the bear habitat and is torn on whether to save Veronica or report the news. Ron chooses to save Veronica and he finally accepts her as an equal. Ron and Veronica then go on to be co-anchors of a global news station.
The point that I am trying to get across is that Veronica joined the team and was no one because of her gender. She was given terrible stories to cover and everyone was very disrespectful towards her. When the news station realized that Veronica was a very talented reporter she was finally given the position she deserved and gave other woman working on the set hope. This movie is somewhat accurate when portraying how woman are viewed at work. There are many cases when they are not taken seriously and they are given jobs that are well below their work skills. This is because men see woman as inferior and think that they are not capable of having the same or better working skills as them. This is clearly shown in the movie and in the end these views are proven wrong.
